Heard the singers playin', How we cheered for more...The crowd had rushed together, Tryin' to keep warm...
For once, I was on Register 1. Now for those who are not familiar with my store, Register 1 is an express lane, about 10 items or less. It has about half the size of a normal belt and is cash only. This will come in play later on, I promise.
My customer had three items. I don't remember the other two, but one was a jug of Dannon water.
Now, in my store, an item either needs to be bagged or stickered before it leaves -- company policy. The sticker in question is about 2 inches long by ½ inch wide, bright orange, and it says "PAID -- THANK YOU". I put a sticker on this jug. She takes the sticker off and puts it on my register.
I put the sticker back on the jug, to which she takes it off again. I tell her, "Ma'am, if I do not put a sticker on the product before it leaves the store, I could be written up." She tells me that she doesn't want it bagged or stickered because doing that "makes her look dishonest." My manager happened to be standing about 5 feet away, and she signaled to me to just let it go this once.
I announce the total ($4.97). Instead of paying me right away, she stands there talking on her cell phone (and she dialed -- it's not like she received the call in line). About five minutes pass, and then she tosses her debit card on my belt.
"Ma'am? I'm sorry, but this is a cash-only lane." "Oh, then I'll use my Mastercard!" "Ma'am, this is a cash-only lane."
She ended up getting her items for free. Management didn't give them to her, but another customer paid this lady's bill just to get her out of the line, as he was tired of waiting. So let's see, she was a b**** in line to me and to the customers behind her who had to wait, and she got off scot-free.
